The time to come together for Puerto Rico and Mexico is now

The humanitarian disaster before our eyes in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Mexico is heart-wrenching to watch. The massive destruction from Hurricane Maria on my beloved island, where I was born, raised as a child and enjoyed my teenage years into early adulthood, leaves me with a sense of helplessness, but not hopelessness.

This is the time when our community must come together and rally for our friends and families in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Mexico. It will be a tough road ahead and we need to be there for them in the most meaningful ways possible.

This devastation is overwhelming, to say the least. Millions have been impacted, homes destroyed, and hundreds more lives have been lost, including that of approximately 21 children in the collapse of a school building in Mexico.

The hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico and its Governor Ricardo Rosselló declared it a “complete devastation.”  The very basic needs we take for granted every day--electricity, water, the Internet--are lost to a large portion of the island.

I am grateful for the outpouring of support, monetary donations, and relief efforts from corporations and nonprofit groups, but more needs to be done for the disaster victims. This is our time to rise, come together and respond to the present critical need. Right now, we are one. The road to recovery and reconstruction will be long, but I know that our resiliency, hope, and faith will see us through.
